This program builds upon skills and knowledge gained in the Patternmaking and Garment Construction program, which is a prerequisite for this program.

The objective of the program is for students to develop a fashion brand. The students will learn to choose a specific range plan for the market and category. This will involve developing patterns, construction of garments, grading for sizes, building a portfolio, research and range presentation.

Module 1: Review of Basic concepts and Skills

  • Applications of Patternmaking and Garment Construction.
  • Proper use of terminology and it’s application to garment construction.
  • Industrial sewing machine Swatch project.
Learning outcome:

To be prepared for the applications in the area of fashion design as relevant to modules being covered later.

Module 2: Flat Pattern making II

  • Create block from working sketch.
  • Measurement and specifications.

Module 3: Introduction to Grading

  • Principles of grading for custom and standard blocks.
  • Grading for pants, skirts, tops, and sleeves.
Learning outcome (Student will be able to):
  • Develop patterns from sketch.
  • Understand principles of grading and apply on selected patterns.
  • Develop garments using patternmaking and grading skills.

Module 4: Introduction to Portfolio Development - Fashion Boards

  • Research fabrics suitable for budget and pattern and styling.
  • Research Fabric selection to prepare design boards and use them to illustrate line development.
  • Research whole-garment forms, and understanding of appropriate end uses.
  • Find Major esthetic issues important to designing and developing garment line.
Learning outcome:

Students will be able to develop knowledge / skills required to prepare fashion boards.

Module 5: Applied Fashion Design and Construction - Portfolio Development

  • Develop apparel products by using skills developed in Patternmaking and Garment.
  • Compilation of Fabric selection to prepare design boards and use them to illustrate line development.
  • Assemble the line board, using flats, swatches, labeling, etc, to graphically present original garments design in detail for a portfolio.
  • Develop and analyze fashion portfolio of selected category/styling as per brief discussed in class.
Learning outcome:

Student will be able to develop a professional portfolio.

Module 6: Draping II

  • Further develop their draping skills for the selected garment styles.
  • Draping for the selected styles in portfolio.
Learning outcome:

Students will acquire skills in pattern making / draping and garment construction techniques to support their designs.

Module 7: Fashion Line

  • Execute a collection of 10 outfits in any number of major apparel categories.
  • Summarize major esthetic issues important to designing and developing garment line.
  • Execute a collection in a number of major apparel categories.
Learning outcome (Student will be able to):
  • Build on patternmaking skills.
  • Design cohesive clothing lines.
  • Develop a portfolio.
